Embarking on the challenging journey of Ironman 70.3 or long course racing requires more than just physical prowess; it demands expert guidance and unwavering support. Enter Clayton Fettell, a coach whose knowledgeable, experienced, and positive approach has transformed athletes.

Clayton Fettell's coaching philosophy is rooted in a wealth of knowledge and experience. As a seasoned ex-professional triathlete, he brings a deep understanding of the sport to his coaching. Athletes under his wing benefit not only from his technical expertise but also from a trustworthy and positive coaching style.

Francis Rupnik is a young athlete who was interested in performing to the best of his ability in the Ironman 70.3 distance. Being a young athlete and a competent swimmer this worked to his benefit, however, having no background in riding and limited running experience did not help.

I started coaching Francis in May of 2022 and with his sights set on Busselton 70.3 in December. We had our work cut out for us. In December Francis finished 6th in his age group (18-24) being first out of the water, he then came home strong with a solid bike (sub 2:40) and a good run (1:35). With a total time of 4:44:24. He wanted to improve.

“Clayton knows my weaknesses, and I know he has the experience
to make me a better cyclist and runner”.
— Francis Rupnik

This year Francis had his eyes set on a number of races throughout the year. But most importantly he wanted to go back to Busselton. We knew starting the year Francis’ weakest legs were the Bike and the run. “Clayton knows my weaknesses, and I know he has the experience to make me a better cyclist and runner”. This year Francis finished 3rd in his age group, being first out of the water, a bike split of 2:22, and a 1:25 half marathon. Taking off 18 minutes on the bike and 10 minutes off the run, finishing with a total time of 4:17:40. This secured him a spot for the New Zealand World Champs, December 2024.

It is clear that if an athlete is willing to do sessions that are prescribed, they will improve. In the competitive world of Ironman 70.3 and long course racing, having a coach like Clayton Fettell is a game-changer. His experience, positivity, and goal-oriented mindset create an environment where success becomes not just a possibility but an inevitability. As you navigate the challenges of triathlon, consider the transformative power of a coach who embodies knowledge, experience, trustworthiness, and enthusiasm.
